Tranent is a small town in East Lothian, Scotland. It is close to the A1 road and approximately 11 miles east of Edinburgh.
The name is thought to be of Brythonic origin, possibly containing the elements Tre and Nant, meaning Town of the Stream.
It was here that the Massacre of Tranent took place in 1797, when a number of local people were killed after protesting against conscription into the British Army.

One of Tranent's most famous sons is actor Gordon Kennedy. Kennedy appeared in the comedy sketch show Absolutely and inserted photographs of Tranent in its sketch based on the bizarre, fictional town of Stoneybridge.

The most established and well known ares include:
Northfield, Coalgate & Lindores Drive areas, which are generally considered to be of a lower class and consist of post-war and 1960's built council houses, however many of these have become privately own over the years.
Muirpark, Annfield & Ormistion Road generally considered to be better quality council housing areas. A large percentage of these homes have become privately owned and are highly sought after in the residential market.
Calaverock & Bankpark, these are the first two ares which were built privately, in order to be bought by the public. Bankpark has generally become to be considered one of the best areas in the Tranent community, with house prices regularly reaching over £200,000.
West Windygoul, Lawson Way & Keneddy Crescent are the knewly built homes in Tranent, and have allowed tranent to reach a near double in size in the past 10 years.
