Banham is a village and civil parish in the English county of Norfolk. The village is about 7 miles (11 km) north of Diss, 12 miles (19 km) east of Thetford and 20 miles (32 km) south west of Norwich.[1]
The civil parish has an area of 16.17 km² and in the 2001 census had a population of 1,443 in 573 households. For the purposes of local government, the parish falls within the district of Breckland.[2]
The village received extensive publicity in 2005 when the contents of 'The Old Rectory' in Banham were auctioned. This auction is said to be one of the largest private antique auctions in Suffolk for more than a decade. Contents sold included the haunted portrait of Henrietta Nelson which was returned to Yaxley Hall after more than a century.
Less favourable was the publicity that Banham received in Noveber 2007, as the home of the notorious Banham Marshall's College (formerly the Old Rectory School)- a special school catering for vulnrable pupils whose former headmaster, George Robson, received a suspended prison sentence following conviction for child cruelty. The Court heard that Robson's pupils were forced to eat their own vomit, goaded into fighting each other and beaten with plimsols and studded belts. robson died the very following day[citation needed] The school was closed in 2003 following the withdrawal of pupils by Norfolk County Council.
