Windmill in BurghleMarsh
Windmill in BurghleMarsh
  About your Area

Burgh le Marsh, a small Lincolnshire town which was granted its town charter in 1401 by King Henry IV, has a wonderful community and has numerous clubs and groups catering for all ages.

The town has six public houses, fish and chip shop, Chinese takeaway, The Windmill restaurant and the Church tea room which is a social drop in for the locals and visitors. Every Thursday morning the Methodist Church hold their coffee morning which is where everyone keeps up to date on local current affairs. The Baptist Church is very active in the community with a youth group, which is jointly administered by the Methodist Church, and also run a bereavement group which has speakers and organises trips and meals out.

The windmill and the parish church of St Peter & St Paul are Burgh le Marsh’s landmark icons.

Having retired here nine years ago from the West Midlands I appreciate the strong community spirit and have personally become intrigued with the whole “village” culture which although Burgh le Marsh is a town “feels” like a village in size and culture. As well as its historic interest I attend the local Parish Council meetings which has made politics to be relevant to me rather than decisions made by unknowns for everyone in general.

Burgh le Marsh feels very special and has proved very inspiring

Burgh le Marsh is a town to the west of Skegness in East Lindsey, England, on the Lincoln-Skegness A158. The population is 2,016.

[edit] Geography

The town is built on a large hill surrounded by former marsh land, and the marsh influenced the town's name, Burgh Le Marsh. Both the windmill and church are visible from far distances. The bypass was opened on November 30, 2007, having started in September 2006, and has reduced traffic congestion dramatically.[1][2] A Roman road passes through the village on the way to Skegness, and comes from the north-west via Tetford and Ulceby.[3] The village is on the site of a former Roman fort.

[edit] Saxon Burial Mound

Near the parish church is a large mound, where Saxon burial remains were found during the 1930s. The mound was later used for cockfighting and so is named Cock Hill.

[edit] Facilities

[edit] Shops

There is a traditional butcher, baker and convenience shops. There is also a hairdresser, a market, an estate agent and a florist.

[edit] Pubs

Local pubs include the Fleece Inn on the Market Square alng with the Bell Hotel, White Hart Hotel, White Swan and Ye Olde Burgh Inn on the High Street and the Windmill Resturant on High Street.[4][5][6]

[edit] Church

The parish church is dedicated to St Peter and St Paul. There is a Baptist church and Methodist chapel.[7][8][9][10]

[edit] Windmills

The town hosts two tower mills, the untarred Hanson's Mill of 1855 (originally four-sailed), now a residence, and the tarred Dobson's Mill, the latter of which is run as a museum.[11] Built in 1813 by Sam Oxley (who also built Alford Windmill a sister mill in the near by town of Alford, Lincolnshire) it is unusual in being the only left-handed tower mill having five sails. "Left-handed sails" mean they rotate clockwise when viewed from the front - a very rare variety of windmill driving.[12][13]

[edit] Twinning

Burgh le Marsh is twinned with the town of Beaumont-sur-Sarthe in the Pays de la Loire in France. This twinning began in 1988 and celebrated its 20th Anniversary this year. The celebrations took place on the weekend of 10 May 2008. The Chairman of the Burgh le Marsh Twinning Association is Neil Cooper and for the Beaumont sur Sarthe Twinning Association is Claude Menard.[14]
