  About your Area

German Rychardes was the first of the family that came to the Island in Queen Marie’s reign; he was a Welshman and servant of Earl of Lincoln, Lord Admiral, who gave him the Vice-Admiral of the Island. He married a widow of Ryces; lived at Brading, in a house on the south side of the church; kept a brewhouse and by venting to ships at St. Helens, grew rich and purchased Yaverland from Hyde Cotsale and others, on whom the right then was. His issue was three sons and four daughters; one daughter married Mr. Dennis, another married Mr. Wright1 of East Mean (Hanberry of Berryton being a coheir of Wright); another to Sturgis, and the fourth to Mr. Brenne, the maddest best companion.

1. The last descendant of the Richards family bequeathed Yaverland to a Rev. Mr. Wright, and the estate continued with his successors till the death of J. A. Wright, Esq., of Crowsley Park, Oxford, in 1822.

Yaverland is a village on the Isle of Wight, just north of Sandown. It has about 200 houses, no shops and one post box. About 1/3 of a mile away from the village, behind Culver Down, is the Yaverland Manor and Church.

The Isle of Wight Zoo is in Yaverland. The zoo has a tiger breeding program. The zoo is built on the remains of the Granite Fort built by Lord Palmerston as a defense against the French in 1860. The grounds were used by the military during World War II as part of the Pluto pipeline to send oil under the English Channel to France to fuel the Allied war efforts.

Southern Vectis bus route 10 links the village with the towns of Newport, Bembridge and Sandown, including intermediate towns.[1]
